  Testing
Tests preformed to qualify the retardancy of treated cedar shakes and shingles
Before any organization can offer fire retardant roofing material and make claims to levels of fire retardant certifications (Class A, B, or C), the product must pass a variety of 1-year, 2-year, 3-year, 5-year, and 10-year real weathering and burn testing.

Tests must be conducted by an independent and recognized third party laboratory.

As well, each month samples are randomly collected from our treatment facility. Every three months, test decks are tested to maintain these classifications.

Fire Smart Roofing Treatment also enlists the services of QAI Auditing & Laboratories Inc. (BC) and Forinteck Laboratories (Los Angeles) to periodically maintain our standard of classifications.

FSR Treatment Inc.'s treated cedar shakes and shingles are subject to nine separate burn tests to evaluate to performance of our treatment process.

These tests include:

Accelerated Weathering Testing

Each of our Class A, B, and C treated cedar shakes and shingles have passed accelerated 10-year weathering tests to ensure the longevity of our fire treatment process.

The ICBO accelerated weathering tests are designed to simulate the exposure and surface erosion experienced by any roofing product exposed to the outdoors over a long period of time. To properly simulate such a long period of exposure, scientists developed a system that bombards the roofing materials with such an intense level of:
  • ultraviolet radiation
  • exposure to high pressure water
  • intense freezing / heating cycles
for thousand of combined hours of testing. When the products facing simulations were compared to products that had been weathered in real life situations, the erosion was identical if not worse.

In order for FSR Treatment to complete the certifications of ASTM, ICBO, UBC, our products were subjected to these simulations by recognized third party laboratories, after which the products were resubmitted to the nine methods of burn tests outlined above.

Real Weathering Testing

Fire Smart Roofing Treatment has passed ICBO requirements for the one, two, three, and five-year real time natural weathering tests. For each test, products were placed outdoors and exposed to the elements for each of the required time periods and then tested with all of the intermittent flame, burning brand, multiple burning brand, and flying burning brand tests outlined by UL.

FSR is now involved with an ongoing 10-year real time natural weathering test. This ICBO real life test is designed to eliminate any doubt, by even the most skeptical of individuals of the longevity of fire retardant from the pressure impregnation treatment process.
